D.Rob,

I agree it's probably a step in the right direction. But unlike an iPhone which is an optional expense and therefore non-harmful to anyone... this potentially has the ability to really mess things up financially for many years to come. An effect that would be negative for all of us.

I hate that I'm being forced to buy health care when I can't afford it. So what does that mean? I'll have to use government hand outs to pay for it. That doesn't make me feel good. I don't want to be handed anything in life I didn't work for and I don't like other people paying my way. OF course, I'll use the coverage if I have it. But that's not the point. Why should anyone else have to pay for my way?

Thanks for clarifying Teesa. Of course you know best, since you are the one taking care of her everyday! Thank you for all your efforts. I know it's hard to be the one there for her every single day.

Love you!

Thanks for the addition to my review Nik!

It's a really great point you make about all of the good guys having hearts of gold, but also capable of being just as dangerous and "bad" as the bad guys.

I love how you put Westley into some very interesting perspective by comparing him to Luke, Solo and the rest. Nice analysis.

Keep this up and I might make you a guest blogger here doing reviews of your own! ;-)

Again, another great review. This movie is story telling at its finest.

"You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
I love the "mostly in danger" part. Nice touch!

And I also love this movie -- easily one of my all-time favorites -- but I did think that of all the actors, Billy Crystal did (imho) try a little too hard to steal the show. Maybe it was the makeup or the fact that I've seen his "curmudgeony old Jewish guy" character in so many other stand-up routines and movies... but he was the only character that, when they first hit the screen, I thought of the actor first and their character second. Carol Kane was magnificent as his wife.

I think the coolest thing about the movie is that it does such a good job of showing you how decent and kind and pure-of-heart the "good guys" are that you forget that they're all really just as "evil" as the bad guys. It's not just Inigo and Fezzik as thugs, but Westley himself was the most murderous and feared pirate on the high seas before returning for his true love.

And the writing is awesome, because so many of the jokes are so quickly told, so witty, and yet delivered so understatedly, that you discover new things about how funny the movie is even after watching it several times.

For me, the movie was so much more awesome than other movies because Westley was my favorite movie role model. Remember, this was the age of Luke Skywalker, Indiana Jones, Ferris Bueller, etc... Out of all of these main "good guy" characters, the one I wished I was most like was Westley, because he was really the ultimate combination of all the traits I'd hope to have -- he was smart, witty, handsome, romantic. He was tough enough to withstand torture and yet gentle enough to find true love and stay committed. He was better at swordplay than a master swordsman and was smarter than the genius. He had travelled and seen the world and yet never stopped yearning for what he left behind. He was a fierce pirate and yet the most loyal of friends. He was polite and sophisticated and yet brutally violent ("to the pain!").

When you think about it, he's a completely impossible person to be. So many of his most endearing traits are directly at odds with each other.

Luke Skywalker is a whiny little brat who becomes special because he's born with a magical ability that most people don't have. The only difference between him and Harry Potter is that Harry Potter isn't a douchebag in the beginning of the story. :)

Han Solo is a swarthy sarcastic free-wheeling fun-loving pirate, but he's kind of a dick to women.

Ferris Bueller is just a conceited prankster who's own ego dominates the entire movie. You're rooting for him, of course, but deep down you're thinking "If I knew this guy I'd want to see him get his ass kicked."

But Westley doesn't evoke any of those "love him but hate him" feelings. And in the end, it's why we love him and the movie. Truly.

He had travelled and seen the world and yet never stopped yearning for what he left behind. He was a fierce pirate and yet the most loyal of friends. He was polite and sophisticated and yet brutally violent (“to the pain!”).

When you think about it, he’s a completely impossible person to be. So many of his most endearing traits are directly at odds with each other.

Luke Skywalker is a whiny little brat who becomes special because he’s born with a magical ability that most people don’t have. The only difference between him and Harry Potter is that Harry Potter isn’t a douchebag in the beginning of the story.

Han Solo is a swarthy sarcastic free-wheeling fun-loving pirate, but he’s kind of a dick to women.

Ferris Bueller is just a conceited prankster who’s own ego dominates the entire movie. You’re rooting for him, of course, but deep down you’re thinking “If I knew this guy I’d want to see him get his ass kicked.”

But Westley doesn’t evoke any of those “love him but hate him” feelings. And in the end, it’s why we love him and the movie. Truly.

I do have What Dreams May Come... it's one of my favorite movies ever. It is in my list of the first few films I want to review. Maybe I'll push that one for next week... hmmm.

Since you've just come through the loss of someone dear to you, I wonder if you have collected any films that deal with death? I don't mean that have death in them--it seems hard to find anything that doesn't (sigh)--but where the death or afterlife experience of one of the lead characters is the subject of the film. Like "What Dreams May Come" or "Defending Your Life."

I too believe the movie wouldn't be as great if Rick ended up with Ilsa. The hero needed to be just that a "hero" unselfish and does what is best for others, everyone.

I also loved the fact that Victor was also a very noble and caring man. Two wonderful men to choose from. That neither one hated the other because they both loved the same women.

Thanks for letting me watch this movie with you on your first movie review you are going to be doing. I look forward to many more from you.

Great Post David! I've seen this film many times but you point out some interesting things about the film that I hadn't thought of, the idea, for example, of Renault as being like the audience. What's particularly notable about this film to me is the fast dialog exchanges and particularly Claude Rains comic timing. I also think this film is a microcosm of any struggle against authoritarian rule, people find ways to "work around" oppressing authority. I had also heard of the last minute rewrites etc. which I think ads to the chaos of the situation in a good way and an "in the moment" quality. I agree that Rick is definitely coming to peace with himself by finding meaning in his life, thinking beyond himself and doing for the good of others. There are signs early on that he does this for others, but to me the real arc in his character is then transforming and sacrificing for the larger cause. Really enjoyed your post!

David, what a great post. i was so excited to re-watch this movie after reading your thoughts on it. I LOVE this movie...the romance, the sacrifice, the the witty humor (totally agree with you Tim about Rains timing...BRILLIANT!) - such a great film. i'm now officially on board the Humphrey Bogart train and am going to watch the other films you requested. Great start on the blog...looking forward to the weeks to come.

Another great post. I appreciate that you mentioned the importance of John Hughes during the 80's...he had an amazingly prolific film career, sometimes releasing two directed films in a year. Breakfast Club holds up very well, I agree...these kinds of films can seem groundbreaking when you're 17 but when you look at it 20 years later you cringe but not this one. I also have a personal like for Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, it really has a very serious story about loss running through it that people miss (John Candy's character's dead wife which explains why he is always traveling). And, I have to say, Uncle Buck is absolutely one of my favs as well...the interrogation by McCauley Culkin of John Candy is hilarious. Thanks for a great analysis!

Great stuff David. such an emotional movie for me. i think i was desperate for this type of experience in high school- acceptance...vulnerability...friendships built on honest openness. i think that's why i loved it so much...it makes me laugh (a lot) but also, in a weird way, it gave me hope that these types of friendships were possible...if not in high school, then at least at some point in my life.

kudos on this one

Very well written, Dave. And, not that it means a whole lot, but I teared up a little on the "They trust him. With those few words she’s given him a great gift. Acceptance and inclusion," line. Might have been the LOTR music playing the in the background that gave it that little extra push.

Nevertheless, nice, bro.
